Social networking sites are one of the current big things, and every few months or so a new site becomes the must-use site. That is a problem i have found with these sites. I experimented with Myspace but then everyone seemed to move to Facebook, i didn't really feel like creating another account on there just for everyone to move to somewhere else by the time i had done it.
A few years ago i created an account on Friendster, which is very popular in Asia but not it seems that well known elsewhere. Which is another problem with these sites, the non-interoperability of them. If you have friends on Friendster and on Myspace you have to log into and maintain accounts on both to keep track. It would be nice to have an uber social networking portal that could manage your accounts across the various sites for you and integrate all the current activity. (Sounds like a great DotCom Bubble 2.0 project, give me 50 million... non returnable... in VC and i'll have a stab...)
So relevance of this? Well if we want to market the University on one of these sites which one? And is having an official presence on these sites a good idea? Personally i think no as it makes us look like Dads trying to dance to emo at their children's birthday party. The Union have a presence on places like Myspace and i think it is best left up to them. What do others think?
